FIA NL Artist-in-Residence
FIA residencies provide opportunities for artists to live and work on Fogo Island for six to eight weeks. NL artists-in-residence are provided with accommodation and studio space, a vehicle for on-island use, and an honorarium of $500 per week. Artists are responsible for their own travel to and from Fogo Island and will be provided with a travel stipend of $500. We ask each artist-in-residence to present one public talk, performance, workshop, or similar event during their time on the island residency.
Applications are welcome from contemporary artists living and working in Newfoundland and Labrador. Artists and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines including visual art, film, new media, arts writing, curating, architecture, and design are all eligible to apply.
FIA residencies are intended for professional practitioners with specialized training, recognition among their peers, and a history of public presentation of their work in a professional context.
This new residency is generously supported by anonymous donors.
Residency period
Successful candidates will be offered a six-to-eight-week residency during the following period: May-June 2025
Application Criteria
Applications are welcome from contemporary artists living and working in Newfoundland and Labrador. Artists and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines including visual art, film, new media, arts writing, curating, design, and architecture are all eligible to apply.
FIA residencies are intended for professional practitioners with specialized training, recognition among their peers, and a history of public presentation of their work in a professional context.
In the case of a collaborative duo, all residency costs (travel budget, stipend, etc.) will be shared between the two members.
Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and will be asked to provide a copy of their license and driver’s record/abstract to FIA.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted using THIS FORM.
The package must include:
- Basic information
- Short biography (150 words maximum)
- Curriculum vitae (4 pages maximum)
- A letter of intention outlining their reasons for participating in the residency and its relevance to their work. (500 words maximum)
- A reference letter from a professional the applicant’s field
And, where relevant provide 1-10 samples of work:
- Maximum 10 images in JPEG format, with relevant caption information included
- Maximum 2 videos – please provide links to video for film related submissions
- Sample of published writing (Up to 10 pages total)

Selection Process
The applications will be reviewed by a jury and selected on the basis of submitted materials and artistic merit.
Applicants will be notified of their status by January 22, 2025.
