Artur Żmijewski
Fogo Island Workers
Artur Żmijewski’s photographic series Fogo Island Workers depicts six figures engaged in physical labour. Shown with their backs to the camera, the subjects are engrossed in their activity and seemingly unaware of the photographer’s presence. The images are drawn from a larger photographic series of people at work on Fogo Island that were taken by the artist as an exploration of bodies in motion. Bodies that are fishing, splitting firewood, renovating houses, grinding metal, preparing food, making furniture, or repairing cars and machinery. They wear coveralls, aprons or protective masks – indicative attire of their trades. The coveralls in particular, with their x-shaped reflective markings, are a ubiquitous if unofficial uniform of those engaged in physical labour on Fogo Island, from civic workers repairing roads to individuals stacking firewood for home use.
